Like the last answerer put it, Vietnam is beautiful. I have been to Hanoi. I heard the people there do not like air-conditioning, even when the temperature hits forty and there is hardly any wind.

Way to go, Vietnam, for an environmental lifestyle!

Where there are large empty spaces in the rural areas, where most people lead an agricultural lifestyle, large signboards have been put up advertising multi-nationals. Vietnam is growing economically. Fast. People believe in Vietnam and they will invest in Vietnam, especially in the field of building and infrastructure.

The city is clean, and most of the people I met were sincere, friendly and unassuming. They dress down-to-earth. The streets of Hanoi are packed to the bursting with motorcycles especially during peak hours. Some motorcycles are large enough to accomodate an entire family. There is excessive horning, but it gives the city a form of character, not unpleasant. If ever the people abandon their motorcycles for cars, however, the streets wouldn't be wide enough.

Land is expensive, both in rural and urban areas. The government isn't especially strict about houses, so people get to build them in almost anyway they like - a few storeys high if they can afford it, single-storied if they can't. Most houses look narrow from the exterior and they extend far in. The land is expensive because it gets passed on generation after generation. People try to buy land along next to roads if they can - it will be easier for them to set up businesses then -a beauty salon by the street, for instance.

Most highways are well-developed, straight and smooth enough for you to be writing on the bus. If you are taking a long trip along one, the rest stations are relatively clean and welcoming.

Halong Bay is breathtaking. You have to see it for yourself!

I have only been there once, so I cannot compare it with how it was before. But things are looking good for Vietnam - coupled with the fact that it is a lovely country with wonderful people, I am sure it's brightest days are yet to come!

Much of Vietnam hasn't changed for decades, but you better hurry if you want to see the "old" Vietnam, things are starting to change quickly. Many modern hotels and office buildings are springing up everywhere in Hanoi and Saigon (HCMC), the road in from the airport in Hanoi used to be low-income and slum type housing, it's now mostly huge modern factories run by foreign corporations. Resort hotels are becoming common along the coastline and beach cities. Even modern housing developments are being built. The charm of Vietnam is the older French colonial style buildings, the narrow tree-lined streets, the rural villages in the country and the feeling that things are much the same there as they were long ago. I'm sure much of it will remain the same, but with the huge economic growth there, you have to expect change and development. If you use China as an example, many cities in China are unrecognizable from what they were 20 years ago, and in many cases 10 years ago. Because of the past political and economic climate in Vietnam change has been slow there compared to most of Southeast Asia. I would go there sooner rather than later, if you want to visit arguably the most charming country in Asia.

Vietnam is Beautiful. with a wide range of terrain from great Beach's to green mountain passes. The economy is improving every year and the people are wonderful. It is becoming the IN place to travel to because it is very inexpensive and there is so much to do and see. I visited last year for a week. Well... I am still here and I bought a house. Obviously I think it is great. Living in Hoian. and at the beach every day. If you need more than that just let me know. I could go on and on!

The economy is fast emerging but unfortunately, rural communities and ethnic and religious have had to be discriminated by the darn Communists. Everytime I step off that plane and walk into the airport, so many communists around...wish I could burn them all!

The yellow flag with three red stripes is the overseas flag btw if you don't know. Don't fly that in VN tho, get caught...get busted. The government and most of the country is corrupt, dirty and filthy with pollution. All the surge in economy is gonna do is ruin the land more. Shame on the communists.
