You will need to check with the Housing Authority in the city in which you are located. A few of the municipalities in So. Cal have rent control statutes, and each differs from city to city.

No rent control in most of California. They can charge as much as people will pay. That's how it works here.

In all the places I have rented, I have signed a Contract. This Contract tells me whether it is a long or short term lease.
It also tells me what my weekly rental fee is and when it will be up for renewal.
It also gives me my short term (monthly) or long term (yearly) information.
You should have gotten and signed a Contract.
