The air flow sensor would definitely make this happen. It could also be maybe a fuel filter. I have known alot of good to come from Auto Zone diagnostics. They have never steered me wrong. I know my sister had a Grand Am and had a very similar problem with her car. She tried cheaper routes like the fuel filter and new spark plugs and wires. Hers was the Mass air flow sensor. It is not cheap if you have to pay a mechanic to do this for you. I sure hope you have a good dad or man in your life that knows a little about mechanics. Luckily I am married to one.

Both of these items will cause the Check Engine light to come on if they set a fault code. The Check Engine light is used to tell you of emissions related problems only.

Definition: The EGR valve is the main emissions control component in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The valve is located on the intake manifold, and opens a small passageway between the exhaust and intake manifold to allow a metered amount of exhaust to flow back into the engine. This reduces combustion temperatures and helps control the formation of oxides of nitrogen. The EGR valve is opened by the application of vacuum to its control diaphragm. Some also require a certain amount of exhaust back pressure before they'll open. On newer vehicles, the valve is electronic and uses one or more solenoids or a small stepper motor. The valve should remain closed while the engine is cold and at idle. It should only open once the engine has warmed up and is running at part-throttle. If the valve sticks shut (or is disconnected), NOX emissions will soar and detonation will often result (See Detonation and Spark Knock). If it sticks in the open position or fails to close all the way, it acts like a vacuum leak resulting in a rough idle, hesitation and possible stalling.
When a MAF is used in conjunction with an exhaust gas oxygen(EGO) sensor, the engine's air/fuel ratio can be controlled very accurately. The MAF sensor provides the open-loop predicted air flow information (the measured air flow) to the engine's ECU, and the EGO sensor provides closed-loop feedback in order to make minor corrections to the predicted air mass

blown egr gasket will make a tapping noise,so will a exhaust manifold leak, look for black soot around the egr housing... watch yourself around the "autozone diagnosis" i've never met a zone employee I would call a mechanic... there in the business of sellin parts... the MAF sensor is questionable, it normally makes the car run like crap

dont know about the egr valve.
but the mass flow sensor would not make engine tap or make noise ... your car engine would make your car jerk while your driving

the tapping your talking about is usually caused by a loose valve ,that needs adjusted,an egr valve wont make it tap,nor will a mass air flow sensor, you have two different sets of problems on that one, take it to a mechanic and see what he says about it,this way he can hear it run,and maybe give you a better idea about whats going on with it,good luck on it hope this helps.

None of these components will make your engine noisy. The EGR valve is for cooling the combustion chambers down above idle,MAF is for measuring the amount of air going into the engine.

A bad MAF sensor can make your vehicle run rough, and a bad EGR valve can definately make noise.

just like the other guy said, the egr vlave is bad, it can cause a tapping noise, and a bad mass air flow will make your car run rough and stall. i know because i had to change 1 on mine, it kept stalling with me.

no......neither one will make a taping noise.....their just trying to sell you part,s you don,t need!......must be something else..but without more detail....an analysis ....at least a good guess...would be very difficult......write back & describe ..in detail..your problem...& what led you to believe that you actually have a problem....maybe then we can help!
