"His Dark Materials" Triology: The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

This is a fantasy, scifi triology. I am not usually a scifi reader, but this set of book is very well written. They are fun and fast read with great momentum. The author has created a mystical world that is very similar to ours but with some obvious differences: human spirit is in a form of a talking animal.

It's about a young girl Lyra's journey from her world to different worlds to save her friend and ultimately saving the universe. It is also a book about the young girl's self discovery and growth.

The first novel of the Triology, The Golden Compass will be released as motion pictures this winter holiday season staring Nicole Kidman as the alluring "bad guy" Mrs. Coulter.

Depends on what you like... But here are some of my recent favorites (I've been getting in touch with my inner teenager):

Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, etc. ( A sci-fi classic, a definite must read for everyone)

Megan Whalen Turner - The Thief, The Queen of Attolia, The King of Attolia (Great characters, great setting)

Markus Zusak - The Messenger, The Book Thief

Mark Haddon - The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time

If you're not sure of what you like, try the links below. The ALA (American Library Association) has lists of books and young adult award-winners. I highly recommend books that have won the Michael L. Printz Awards (Best Young Adult Novels) and the Alex Awards (Best Adult Novels for Teens). A great place to start looking for something to read. Good luck.

If you're into video games and best friends stories I think you might like my YA novel GAMEPLAYER: The Genesis Portal. No sappy love involved.
GAMEPLAYER follows the adventures of Nine-dog, Gator and Louie; three racially diverse buddies growing up in the skateboarding, video gaming obsessed Santa Monica, California beach life-style.
Their lives revolve around school, skateboarding and video gaming until a bizarre encounter with a run amok video game propels them into a deadly world of terror, murder and intrigue.
It's available at the normal online sites like amazon, B&N, Borders, etc. and as an e-book on mobipocket.com.
You can check it out further and read the prologue on my site www.myspace.com/gameplayerbook.

Not meant as a commercial just a suggestion,
Gary Anderson

Ohhhh, I have a list for you...

His Dark Materials Trilogy By Phillip Pullman
I'm reading it again, the best trilogy ever!!! It's fantasy.

Crank By Ellen Hopkins
Beautifuly written in first person by a girl addicted to heroin, written in prose, like poetry. I don't recommend her other book though, Burned. The ending was horrible.

Smack By Melvin Burgess
Great book, must read, again about drug addiction.

My Name is Not Esther By Fleur Beale
About a girl who was put into a cult by her mother. Very good book. Makes you think

Goddless By Pete Hautman
About kids deciding to worship a watertower, sounds silly, but very good.

Candy By Kevin Brooks
He's a good author, you should read his books.

Lucas By Kevin Brooks
Another by him, a good love story, but not to sappy...

"Song of the Lioness" Quartet (4 books) by Tamora Pierce. Starts off with "Alanna the First Adventure." About a girl who wants to be a knight, and her twin brother wants to be a sorcerer, so they switch places and she pretends to be a boy. Many swords and sorcery type adventures, as well as the difficulty of growing up a girl while pretending to be a boy.

All other books by Tamora Pierce are also excellent. Nothing inappropriate. No adult situations or bedroom scenes.
