i'm a 13 y.o. girl and its always been my dream to be an actress. one problem i have though, is that i don't know if i could be as succesful as say, mischa barton or miley cyrus because i'm black. would i be able to have lead roles in which my leading man was white? would i be able to be in big box office hits? would i be known as america's sweetheart or win an oscar? what do you think?

I would say learn your art as well as you can, take good care of your body and always try to be better.

Denzel Washington, as you know, is a black man, and an outstanding actor. Some of his roles could have gone to a white actor. I think that means the barriers are coming down at least a little bit.

Depending on the scripts you could be cast opposite a white actor. Depending on the Academy you could conceivably win an oscar.

I have known black women who I have found very attractive and who have had delightful personalities. They were not trying to accomplish what you have chosen to be your dream.

But you are 13 and as many things as I have seen change in my 66 years it is very possible there will be even more dramatic changes in your lifetime. Be ready by being the best you can be.

By the way, I am white.

The world is changing for the better with regards to racial equality. There was a wonderful actress named Dorothy Dandrige who was a movie star in the 40's and 50's. She was beautiful and talented but due to her race she was never fully recognized and never maximized her fame. She died a sad death. Years later Halle Berry played her in a tv movie and won an Emmy. Halle also won the Oscar for Best Actress. That same year Denzel Washington, a black man, won the Oscar for Best Actor. Anything is possible if you reach for the stars. Look at Raven Symone, one of the most popular, talented stars on Disney. Look at Usher the singer. Hone your craft, take classes, work on being the best entertainer you can be...then take the world by storm.

i think some of the most extraordinary things happen to some of the most ordinary people. you being black black has nothing to do with how far you can go and how big you can be. the color of a persons skin does not make them a good actress...its the color of your heart. you sound like you have a bright heart, ready to act with all you've got. i say go for it. you might be suprised at how much you can learn by following your dreams.
