Can you develop a peanut allergy as an adult? Since I've had my daughter, everytime I eat peanut butter or anything with peanut butter in it like cookies or peanut butter m & m's my throat burns like crazy! Would this be considered an allergy? Can pregnancy cause allergies to develop?

Yep, after having my second I developed a nut allergy. I also gained extremely sensitive skin. I have to use free and clear laundry detergents and gentle soaps on my skin. It's funny how pregnancy can mess with your body!

You can develop an allergy to anything at any time. And the one you are describing is serious! Nut allergies are considered "life-threatening" because they cause anaphylaxis - described by the Food Allergy network this way : "An anaphylactic reaction may begin with a tingling sensation, itching, or a metallic taste in the mouth. Other symptoms can include hives, a sensation of warmth, wheezing or other difficulty breathing, coughing, swelling of the mouth and throat area, vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, a drop in blood pressure, and loss of consciousness. These symptoms may begin within several minutes to two hours after exposure to the allergen, but life-threatening reactions may get worse over a period of several hours."

The best thing to do is contact your doctor and get tested for food allergies. If you do have food alergies they will probably give you an Epi-pen and teach you how to use it and big list of foods to avoid and they should teach you how read a food package for potential allergens.

Please don't put this off, peanut allergies ( if this is one) can progress quickly and turn quite serious. in the meantime if you find yourself in the same situation, with the sore/tingling throat take a benadryl and get to a doctor/hospital.

Check out the Food Allergy Network for more info.

Yes you can develop a food allergy anytime during your life. The nice thing to know is that sometimes allergies to things can be temporary. Sometimes they will trade off. Sometimes they will stay with you all your life.

Burning, swelling, and/or itching are definately some of the signs that there could be an allergy present.

The best way to know for certain is to eliminate the items that make up the ingredients of peanut butter, mm's etc. to be certain. Also are you drinking anything with them when you are eating them. What is in the beverage?

There are all natural peanut butters you can buy that dont have the additives in them , yet are just as delicious. You could try something like that.

My daughter has grown up severly allergic to preservatives in medications and certain foods. She has to be careful.

As for me I have been unable to eat any sort of seafood or fish my entire life.

It wasn't long ago I was at a party and it turned out that the dip was made with Worcester Sauce mixed in.

I didn't know it and the hostess hadn't thought to check the label before she followed the recipe. And the recipe doesn't list the ingredients of the items in a recipe.

I broke out in head to toe hives and was totally miserable for several days. My husband thought he would have to take me to the hospital when my throat began closing up.

One of the ingredients of Worcester is anchovies.

Hope this info helps. Hopefully your allergy will be temporary and not permanent.

Pregnancy can do weird things to the body. This could be a sign of an allergy to peanuts, but could also be acid reflux. If you had heart burn or acid reflux with you were pregnant (which is completely normal during pregnancy) it could have thinned the lining around your esophagus to a point where it hurts to swallow certain foods. I would see your doc before diagnosing anything yourself though.
