It results when resources are plentiful, competition is low, environment is conducive to long life and morbidity/mortality rates are low etc. Sort of like now, with humans. But also can be seen in agar growth plates with bacteria.

OK, what does "exponential growth" mean? I would think that it referrers to increasing population of offspring that are themselves, reproducing at such a rate that more organisms are created than dies in each generation.

So, what does that suggest? More offspring in each generation than the one before it. If the offspring population increase with each new generation over the previous one, what is that going to do to the environment; and to available resources like food and shelter? The rest is obvious.
