what is the benefit of fast-tracking (eg. summer school) in high school?

None for normal kids. Only good for kids have have not done much study in normal time because of some personal problem or accident. Summer school is a waste of time. It's the time for rest and play and recharge you battery for another year. You will learn something but always at a greater cost later in life.

My son fast-tracked so that he'd have more space in his schedule for the stuff he really wanted to learn: jazz band, marching band, theory of music, robotics and electronics.
