Even though you have a graphics card and can see XP, it doesn't mean you have a suitable card for a particular game. You should check the requirements of your game and see if your graphics capability matches up.
I have a PC which uses the built in VGA instead of a separate graphics card and some 3D games don't work on it.

Do you have a 3D Graphics card?
Open your computer up and look and see Is the cable to the monitor plugged into the motherboard itself or is it plugged into a smaller card which is plugged into the motherboard?
If the former, you don't have a 3D card. If the latter, you need to find out what model card that is and download its drivers. If it is old, it may just be too old to support the game you are trying to run.
