Pediatric dosing is based on the weight of the patient and the effects on the pediatric patient, since effects on children differ from those on adults.
Example - Ritalin. Originally used in elderly to stimulate lethargic patients. Now used to help children 'focus' and calm so they can pay attention.
Chloral hydrate - a sedative, frequently makes children 'hyper' instead of sedated.

Pediatric dosing is based on weight. Also, most meds have different affects on children and senior citizens, too, than they do on the so-called "normal" patient.
