Now don't hurt me, but I'm really curious (and serious): Why don't pitchers ever apologize for hitting batters? Do they only hit them on purpose? Is it ever an accident?
I know I'm probably being naive but couldn't a simple "Sorry, man" prevent a lot of fights?

Sorry, folks, but a lot of these answers were very disappointing. Getting hit is NOT supposed to be part of the game, and apologizing for hurting someone is a sign of weakness only to a Neanderthal. So much for sportsmanship.

I doubt that they ever do it on purpose. If I hit someone with an object traveling at 90mph I would at least say "my bad".

well, sometimes it's just a result of a pitch getting away from the pitcher or the batter crowding the plate too much, and those are just accidents on the pitcher's part and the batter will pretty much always know if the pitcher was trying to hit him or not, but other times, when you see the big brawls, is when the pitcher hits the batter as an act of retaliation, which can be for the other teams' pitchers hitting their batters, the other team showing up the pitcher, the teams talking smack with each other before the games, just general bad blood between the players or teams. and in those situations usually the batter knew what was going on and obviously there isnt going to be any apologizing going on between them.

Speaking from a pitcher's perspective, I was never sorry I hit a batter, I was mad. First, I never wanted to hit a guy on purpose. Brush them back, yes, but hit them, no. Second, I just put a man on base, and the only reason he got there was entirely my fault! If I have to apologize to anyone, it's my teammates for not doing my job,

In Japan you will sometimes see pitchers apologize for hitting batters, so certainly part of the explanation is cultural.

I don't this pitchers apologize unless it's really a serious hit, like a critical hit that sends the batter to hospital because getting hit should be an expected part of playing baseball. Also, I don't think fights start from the pain. It should be thee soreness from getting hit in front of a large audience. Their ego suffered a critical hit even if they didn't...

Some pitchers apologize some don't

It happens often since some players stand right on top of the plate covering the inside part where pitchers usually throw there to get them off the plate...some hitters move away some absorb the contact...example David Eckstein!

And besides some hitters want to get hit...they'll do anything to get on base when they're on a prolonged slump

Thats like saying someone blocked your shot in basketball and then apologizing for doing it haha

because getting hit is part of the game. sometimes pitchers do apologize to a hitter if it's close to the hitter's head or at it. but still it's not often that a pitcher does so. Pitchers also don't want batters to be comfortable hitting against them so every once in a while they make a hitter dance.

It is sometimes an accident, if they are trying to throw a more difficult pitch, such as a curve ball, it is very easy for the ball to slip and hit the batter. However, it can sometimes be on purpose, like hitting a player because the pitcher's teammate was hit by a pitch last inning. And saying your sorry shows that you don't belong in baseball.

Some pitchers do apologize. Zack Grienke of the Royals went and apologized to Torri Hunter face to face after a game early this season because Zack accidentally hit him in the head with a pitch.

well its not a stupid question. but sometimes when batters are really cocky pitchers will hit them to show them a thing or too but usually that doesn't happen. most of the time you'll see a pitcher nod to 1 base and the batter will shrugg his shoulders or something. pitchers also may apologize in between innings or during the 7th inning stretch or after the game.

I have often wondered if they ever apologize after the game or something. If I hit someone regardless of my intention, and they got hurt, I would apologize but, I guess that's why major league baseball is just for men..lol...Us woman are too nice! We would be apologizing all over the place, "oh, I am sorry, did I break your nail?"..:oh, I am sorry, did I get your uniform dirty?"...I am going a little overboard but, you know what I mean..Women are just more conscious about hurting people whether it is physical hurt or emotional..

I saw a special on ESPN about pitchers throwing inside. Sometimes its accident, other times its to send a message to the batter who's too close to the plate. or retaliation for a teamate getting hit....... Sorry doesnt work any more.......
