Actually, the style was fairly popular at the time. And it is not Hitler's original style; before he was ordered to trim it (while in the army), Hitler wore a "walrus" mustache. However, that interfered with the fit of a gas mask and he trimmed it down to the style we now associate with him.

Others of that era wore that same style: Charlie Chaplin and Oliver Hardy are 2 well known examples.

Many people thought Hitler wore the toothbrush mustache to imitate Charlie Chaplin, but that is unlikely.

With Hitler's use of the style, it became less popular. In fact, when Charlie Chaplin made "The Great Dictator", he (Chaplin) wore that style to deliberately spoof Hitler.

See some of the references below. Interesting reading.

Nope. Charlie Chaplin wore a toothbrush mustache before Hitler. He appeared with one in the 1914 silent film "Kid Auto Races at Venice." In fact there is a theory that Hitler may have started wearing a toothbrush mustache because of Chaplin.

Shouldn't this be in fashion or history or something? I don't ever recall seeing another public figure with a Hitler moustache before him - so perhaps he was a fashion trendsetter in his day. I mean, look how many people imitate him now!!
