Trees provide a natural cover for the soil. That helps to 'cushion ' the fall of rain that could quickly erode the soil and wash it away over time. Also the roots of trees and other plants help to bind the soil together (grass especially). This prevents the soil from being washed away during rainfall and flooding after heavy rains.
In countries in Africa were there is desert encroachment grass is planted to help keep the scarce good soil in place that farmers need. The grass is very tough and can withstand the elements like wind and rain very well.

when the soil is too loose and heavy rains pour, soil erosion occurs. but if there were trees, the small hairs on their roots will cling onto the soil, making the soil more "together", and thus the soil will not slide off easily.

Hmmm.... let's see... what was the price of gas 20 years ago? Or actually back in the 70s when I first questioned those idiots that refused to explore for oil on our own soil.... Even when the Saudis dropped to price of oil to near $10 a barrel to discourage our exploration and coal gasification programs, I wanted our own oil exploration.... When y'all are standing in line begging for a cup of rice to feed your families, remember to thank an environmentalist...

They put out roots that help to hold the soil in place so that it will not wash away. It's that simple.

Basically, they tangle their roots in it, pinning it down, and suck water out of it, keeping it from getting so wet that it flows away.
