Why, no, because...
(1) Those who commit crimes are obviously not afraid of prison.
(2) Prison doesn't work - recidivist rates are too high.

And would community service and other alternatives work? Well, do you think it would strike fear into hard-hearted criminals? Do you honestly believe that taking care of senior citizens will soften mafia members? It might work for teenaged delinquents, but criminals in ORGANISED CRIME?

The only way to go about dealing with organised crime is to make its participants tremble before the law. If the death penalty is imposed, then it should be dealt efficiently, cruelly, and at minimal cost (provided that trials can still be fair). And it should be imposed - because if you kill off a bad egg, then he will no longer be around to cause more trouble.

But as I hinted - teenaged delinquents and those just starting to slip into crime are a different matter.

I think the police forces and laws are pretty effective.

Prisons yes. When you say orgainized crime, I am talking about Mafia, Mafiya, Tongs, etc. - not gangs. Many organized crime groups come from countries and cultures that are steeped in it. I don't think they can be rehabilitated, since they have grown-up with it.

A lot of people say prisons are like college for criminals, i.e., they become better at their trade. Members of organized crime families get all of the "training" and "support" they need.

we have over one million laws on our books now, and the more we get the more loop holes a smart lawyer can find, we need to get rid of at least 50 % of our laws and enforce the ones that are needed fully, when you put a man in prison and treat him like a animal he will act like a animal, when he is released he has no family nor friends on the out side to assist him , things are so strange and he has no where to go ,and so many employers won't hire any one who has been in prison , even tho this mans may have been charged with something that is not any danger to the business nor any one else, we need to make sure the charged person is also guilty, to many innocent people are going to jail simple because the prosecutor wants another feather in his cap, some even end up on death row as in Texas, Calif, and Ill. many where the prosecutor had the police to lie and knew these men were not guilty, the prosecutor in Ill, had 47 men on death row, knowing most of them were not guilty, after a investigation, no one was prosecuted and the prosecutor is now the Attorney General for Illl, ( what kind of justice is this?)
some laws aer so stupid, how can you justify giving a man 3 years in federal prisonfor haveing a open beer in a federal park? how can you give a man 4 years for peeing on the interstate, hidden where no one could see him? our prison system is not trying to help these people , they simple want more help at prison industries, UNICORE,and who profits from unicore? it is a closed stock company where only prison or federal law enforcement personell can buy the stock and with free labor you can bet it has got to be profitable, I could go on for hours on this subject but there are so many ways to make prisons more efficent and do so much more good if it were not for the greedof so many wealthy people

No. More police, more laws, and more prisons aren't the answer to anything in America! All that means is more tyranny and oppression. What we need is less of those and a lot more armed citizens! Armed citizens makes for a more friendly people and virtually non-existent crime society.
And THAT'S the truth! If we were all armed, no criminals would dare attack us and the terrorists would have a very hard time killing us!!

We have too many laws, most of the laws are to protect the criminals. For instance you can't shoot some sob while they are stealing your car in the front yard. the police arrest dirtbags and they don't get prosecuted and sentenced. if they do , it is for a few days for a serious crime. The jails and prisons are country clubs and criminal law colleges. The police can't do anything to criminals, so they go after infractions by law abiding citizens because they will just pay their fines and the cop thinks he is doing a good job.
There are not enough jails for the low lifes because most of the jails are better than half the people's homes and they get free health insurance and don't pay taxes.

No, for prison teaches criminals to become better crimminals and even harder and more violent. More police only gives more people the chance to abuse their power (I've met these types and it is not pretty.) and more laws are not need to combat it. Why write a law 20 different ways on not to steal? Makes no sense to me.

NOPE, because organized crime tends to corrupt police.
if you haven't noticed, they never jail the mobsters until they are about ready to die anyway.
