I am from the northeast united states and tonight in the early evening there was a large star located approximatly at 5 o'clock relative to the moon. It seemed really large does anyone know if this was a planet? if so which one? if not what else could it have been?

It sounds like it's Venus, but it only comes out momentarily at sunset & sunrise. So if it's still big & bright at night, then it's Jupiter.

Near Jupiter you'll see the 2nd brightest planet -- Saturn. Sometimes you can even see the red Mars. If you look up from the dark countryside sky, you can even see Andromeda, our closest neighbour galaxy. One day, our galaxy will merge with Andromeda~

From right to left, you have the sun, Mercury (too near the sun to be seen), Venus, moon, Saturn. Saturn is just now disappearing behind the moon; it will reappear to the right of the moon about 5 a.m. EDT, Tuesday, but it will be below the horizon in the north at that time.

Watch for the International Space Station.

Read Lindajuene's answer.

Then tell us where you have been? You been in jail or something?

After that bit of sarcasm, also note that Saturn will be very visible in that region with the moon and Venus

Hi, I know it may be incorrect but its a possibility that was Venus. Venus is visible at sun rise and sun set here on Earth.

That is Venus. Look again tomorrow night and see how much it (the Moon) moves. If you are like my grandmother, you will be surprised.
