Trust, love, caring, discussion, support and all the little jobs that make a beautiful human being.
It worked for Gwen and I for 42 years. There are other things but the loss is still too fresh to think of them.
Hope this helps.

*Trust
*Communication
*Honesty
*Compromise

These factors are important in any relationship, LGBT or not. Trust is important because if you do not trust your partner it can ruin even the best of relationships. It's extremely important! Someone should be able to come up to you and say "Your bg/gf or husband/wife is cheating on you with so & so" and you can relply "No I'm confident that you're mistaken." And you actually mean it... you will talk to your partner before jumping to conculsions.

Communication is important because without talking, listening & discussing there is no relationship. You have to know when to talk, when to listen & what topics to discuss and which ones to "agree to disagree" on.

Honesty is important because why does someone want to be with a dishonest person... dishonesty means lieing, cheating, stealing, etc. NEVER be dishonest with the one you love!

Compromise is important because when you dont agree upon something you have to reach a point where you are both satsified with the end result of the "arguement/fight" or "discussion" and can go to bed (or continue the day) without be hurt and/or angry!

Open communication in all honesty, mutual respect, and a no-other-option commitment to each other. Dynamics are different in every relationship. But keeping the communication channels open is a great way to begin.

Honesty, trust, communication, and love. All of these are necessary for any long-term relationship.

Examples:
Situation: I don't talk to my boyfriend near enough.
Result: We fight. (Whoops...)

Situation: My friends got married in Boston a couple years ago (two women). They fight, but they talk over their problems, and they trust each other with their lives, their souls, and their everything.
Result: They've been together for 5 years now (dating and marriage).

I don't think it matters if it's a straight or gay marriage/relationship. The key to any happy relationship/marriage is honesty, open communication, patience, and compromise.

communication - to be able to resolve differences without killing each other and better yet, make-up sex

Trust - For me that means monogamy and trust that I'm not being lied to

Give and take on both parts - being able to give in and let her be right now and then ;)

Not running out the door when things go wrong, but working together to find solutions.

Being able to make each other laugh.

Believing in the other person and their goals and dreams.

Respect for the other persons feelings and thoughts.
