Dodge City, Kansas
Circa 1876

It was Friday morning. The day before the big outdoor concert. Sunshine MacGillicutty had so much to accomplishment in 2 short days. She was scheduled to be in the show. She was thrilled beyond words.....Wait!....That's not quite accurate. Sunshine ALWAYS had something to say!!! She was still working on the songs that she would sing .....Still working with the musicians who would back her up. She also had a farm to run....Tasks that HAD to be accomplished. Her boyfriend, U.S.Marshal Matt Dillon was worried about her frenzied schedule.
Matt:"SunnyMac. You have GOT to stop for a while. You'll collapse at this rate. Come on, sweetie.....Let's just take a little nap." He gave her a mischievious grin and started to take off his boots.

Sunshine:" Matt, (5) I'll sleep when I'm dead." She gave him a peck on the cheek and went to the livingroom to fix her guitar.

Matt could NOT believe his ears! This was the VERY first time she had ever declined some time in the sack with him. He followed her into the other room.
Matt:"Are you serious? Come on, Sunny. I love you, darlin'. I just want to spend some time with you while you are actually standing still."
Sunshine:" (4)Thank you for loving me, baby. But right now (2)My guitar lies bleeding in my arms. It's in pain, baby. I need to repair it."
Matt sat next to her and nuzzled her neck.
Matt:" Well what would you say if I told you that I 'm in pain?" She laughed.
Sunshine:"I would say.......mmmmmmm......That after this concert is over."......... She started singing to him........♫ " I'll be strumming your pain with my fingers.♫ "
Matt:"Awwwwww, sweetie. You're killing me softly with your song." ( I rock!)
As he walked dejectly to the bedroom, alone, he muttered to himself, " Well, between now and the end of the concert, I'll be (3)Living on a prayer."
Sunshine :"When this is all over, will you (6)Love me back to life, baby?"
Matt:"Count on it!!!"

On the day of the concert, Sunshine had successfully completed all her work. The guitar was squared away, the other musicians knew how to play her songs, her house and farm were still standing...... and her man? Well, her man was anxious for the concert to be over with. He missed all the doting that she had always lavished on him. Truth be known, though, he was very proud of her musical talent. Yep. He knew he had nothing to gripe about. He loved his Sunshine.

The sun was going down as the crowd started gathering for the concert:

The master of ceremonies introduced the first act: The Cartier Family. They played three songs, the third being their real toe tapper......."If Your Poppa Don't Gamble Your Momma Won't Cry."
Then came the Evermost Brothers; Two young boys from Kentucky that sang like a couple of bird dogs. Their parents joined them for their last number to try and salvage their careers. http://home.comcast.net/~cadero/everly2.jpg

And then came the big moment.
Master of Ceremonies: "And now, ladies and gentlemen......
Direct from Dodge City...........(7)Wanted dead or alive.........
MISS SUNSHINE MACGILLICUTTY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A roar went up from the crowd:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIRMyKNusBE
Like a (1)Blaze of Glory, Sunshine took the stage and launched into her first number:
" She Loves Him, Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!"
Matt beamed as she looked right at him:http://www.fiftiesweb.com/tv/james-arness-1.jpg
But it was her final number that shook the rafters!! As she sang her song, members of the Ring A Ding Brothers Circus performed all around her. The crowd went wild when she climbed up on a swing during the number.
Yep.....She brought the house Down !http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPvRFvX2Oaw

My love,
I am writing this letter to Thank You For Loving Me. All my life, I wanted to go out in a Blaze of Glory, and it looks like I'm finally going to get my chance. Ever since I found out that I am Wanted, Dead or Alive, my time is borrowed and I am Living on a Prayer. I have been on the run so long, and I am so tired, but to rest now would be the end of me. For now, I shall continue to run; I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. Even now, My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms. I can only pray that whoever finds this letter that I've stuck to the back of this SLIPPERY WHEN WET sign, will forward it to you. I must go now, and I have but one final favor to ask of you. When they finally catch me, and my heart beats no more, please don't forget me. IF it is only in your dreams, promise me that you will Love Me Back To Life. You will always be in my heart.

Love,
Jon

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE
JAKE BARLOW
$5000 REWARD

the signs were pasted up all over town for all the good they'd done. I had stopped and carefully peeled one off the wall in the post office on my way from Ethan's burial. I looked at Jake's evil face and concentrated on the space between his eyebrows, that was where I planned to aim when I blew his head off!
Jake Barlow was too powerful in these parts to be made to pay for the crimes he committed. No one, including the local lawmen would even try to get in his way, let alone take him down. That had made my choice easier. It was up to me and I planned to make sure it was done right!

I had not shed a tear at my husband's burial.. .........
As they shoveled dirt in the hole over his casket my eyes were clear and bright, my only thoughts now were on retribution. I did not even think of what I planned to do as revenge, but rather as his Earthly karma, the Universe getting a head start on his eternal punishment..........

I have no desire to live without Ethan. I've been up for three days now without eating or sleeping but I'm not hungry or tired. I'm living on a prayer. My prayer is to be the instrument of Jake's destruction. I close my eyes for a moment and think, I could just go to sleep......give in to the feeling...........
BUT NO!!! I am determined and I won't be swayed by the weakness of the flesh. I'll sleep when I'm dead, which will be soon enough.

I think more about what I am about to do. In the eyes of God it is a sin to take a life, to take two lives......
But I am already dead without my beloved. I look up.
"God, I wish you could love me back to life"
The silence remains. I feel truly alone.

I know that Jake will be coming for me and I'm ready for him. I sit by the window thinking of my life with Ethan, all the love, the laughter, the pleasure and even the sad times. He loved to hear me sing and play my guitar. The next time he would hear it would be when I met him in Heaven. My guitar lies bleeding in my arms now, it feels all the pain I can no longer feel. I sing a final song to my beloved, while my guitar gently weeps. "Thank you for loving me, now and forever"
I see Jake coming up the walk, he has no idea.
I wan't him to see me, I wan't him to know. I won't shoot him in the back like he did Ethan.
I say a final prayer and step out onto the porch.
He sees me and we lock eyes. It's the last thing he ever sees.
I turn the gun on myself, departing in a blaze of glory.

We were the Fabulous Flippers. We were a poor band, playing old rhythm and blues tunes in national guard armories and VFW halls. Times were tough for us, then in the mid-sixties, because the Beatles and Stones had become so popular that four piece bands were the rage. We were hauling around eight guys. In addition to the guitars, bass, and drums, we had sax players and a horn section. We weren't making any more than the smaller bands, but each of us got half the money. By the time we deducted our expenses on the road, we were living on a prayer.

I was the lead guitar player. We always led off the first set with "Harlem Shuffle." The Rolling Stones covered it later, but we did the version introduced by Bob and Earl in the early '60's. We'd start by killing all the lights in whatever hall we played. Pitch black. Then, Ray, the bass player, would announce on the P.A.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. . . ."

The horn section would blast a chord that hit the audience like a brick wall . . .

"IT'S THE FABULOUS FLIPPERS"

Three more progressive chords, and then they hit the stage lights. We began the set in a blaze of glory. All of us wore black sharkskin suits. Everybody did choreographed dance steps. My guitar lay bleeding in my arms while the horns and saxes alternated between playing fills and then taking over the melody from me and our rhythm guitarist. The audience was stunned, because they weren't used to hearing that much sound from the stage.

(This is not Bob and Earl, but was as close as I could find.)

Our bass player, Ray, was the coolest guy in the band. He played a black, fretless Ampeg bass. He layed down a sharp, dependable rhythm and knew just when to hit the bottom of that minor to make the whole sound cool and blue. Ray was the only one of us who didn't dance. He stood stock still, cigarette dangling from his mouth, feet planted firmly on the stage. He never appeared onstage without that cigarette and those black horn-rimmed sunglasses.

Ray had a black girlfriend, Charlene, who traveled with us. She collected the receipts, paid expenses, kept our books, made reservations. In short, she made sure the band stayed afloat and realized at least a slim profit margin.

One night in Enid, Oklahoma, five rednecks saw Ray and Charlene emerge from the tour bus after one of our breaks. They didn't like the idea of a "mixed" relationship, and were waiting for Ray after the last set. Ray stepped out back for a smoke while the stage was being torn down and packed. He was jumped and beaten with baseball bats by the five guys.

Charlene and I came out and they ran, realizing the rest of the band would be right behind. Ray's skull was crushed, he was bleeding from his ears and nose. Ray knew he didn't have long to live.

"If it were possible, I'd have you love me back to life," he told Charlene, "Thank you for loving me. That, and the band, were really all I've ever had."

"Hush, baby," said Charlene. "You save your strength. You're going to be alright, you hear?"

"I'll sleep when I'm dead, Charlene," whispered Ray. With that, we could hear the rattle that signalled he was at his end.

The band scraped up what cash it could to offer a reward for information leading to the arrest of the guys who killed Ray, wanted dead or alive. The problem was that nobody other than Ray had really seen them, and few people in Enid really cared if they were ever caught.

At his funeral, the Fabulous Flippers, with a stand-in bass player, played Ray's favorite song, "Hold On, I'm Coming" by Sam and Dave. Ray's Ampeg bass sat on stage in its guitar stand, moving as little as it would if it were in Ray's arms, his feet planted firmly on the stage.
