I've been working in a role for almost 2yrs - focusing on product development for existing and new customers. All of a sudden my position has been changed so that now I am a 'travelling salesperson' going business to business trying to sell a product. These are two different roles - can an employer do this and where can I go for help? I've told my boss I'm not comfortable with sales and I've pretty much been told tough luck! Should my original role be made 'redundant'? Pls help!!

Unless you have an employment contract that specifically details your job description, you're most likely out of luck, unless they switch you from salary to comission (most states do have regulations against this). If your company has stopped caring about you, it may be time to look for employment elsewhere.

Good luck.

Although there are some unknowns here (size of the business, is there a salary change, do you have a contract or does an Award or AWA apply, etc) it is reasonable to say that an employer cannot materially change your job specification without your approval. It is a nonsense that employers can do whatever they like in these situations. I suggest you contact the Industrial Relations Commission in your state (in Australia) to find out what remedies are available to you.

YEP, they basically can do anything with your job including fireing you for NO REASON. This could be their way of getting rid of you. Don't quit ~ make them fire you then you can get unemployment. Ask for training, guidance, mentor, etc. to train for the new position.

You could talk to an unemployment counselor at the State Dept of Employment Security. Good luck.

Your employer can do anything they want, unfortunately. By your boss telling you "tough luck," it sounds like they're trying to make you quit. Go find a job you'll thoroughly enjoy before this one screws you around again.

If there's no contract between you and your employer, then employment is "at will". Your job description can change as they see fit.
