Embrace your cynicism. Maybe everyone else is wrong, and you are being realistic. If you are a pessimist (always assuming the worst) then you are rarely disappointed. Just stop worrying about others thinking you are pessimistic and cynical.

This is a very unhealthy situation. expecting the worst can be self fulfilling. You need to memorize positive thoughts and reject the negative ones.
Being happy is a choice. You choose to be satisfied with what life has dealt you and if you got lemons, make lemonaide.
Say to yourself "What are my gifts and talents?" How can I utilize them more to make the world a better place? Do more volunteer work, it is a good way to find yourself appreciated.
Looking outward from yourself is also a healthy habit of positive people. There is a good book called "The 7 Habits of Highly successful People." i recommend it. I also recommend that you consider Cognitive Therapy.

Strive to be who you want to be and strive to do what you want to do. Also, why do you think the classic buddists or monks who don't seem be bothered by everything. Its because they understand humanity in all of its faults and desires and accept it and find happiness in their ability to transced those things and have the power over them to not let them affect them personally since they know the truth. The only truly happy people are those who strive for inner peace rather than outer social harmony.
Reflect upon what you truly care about and then do a good job at caring about that, it is rewarding.

There is one key word within your question that you should focus upon.
BE.
you are always being.
Being is what you do while you are alive and exist.
You are never not being.
To be comes from belief.
Believing => Being => Doing
Look at your reasons for being, there you will find your beliefs.
Modify your beliefs and you will truely modify your being.
When you are ready, you may choose at any moment who you are to be. And in the very next moment you can be something entirely different.
It is that simple really.
This is what actors do.
This is why they seem real, like they are really being who they portray.
Their acting stems from being, which comes from belief in that particular characters values and goals and cares and worries...
Think of it.
You will find your own answers.

In HINDU philosophy, it states that reduce your 'wants' ( requirements, needs). and be happy with what you have. Consider yourself to be lucky compared to many on the roads.
Think positive and tried to help others. Think of the nature with all the problems we give to the nature, nature gives its bountiful to us as rain, water, light, breeze etc.
go and help others. Smile and laugh.
People are selfish that is natural. be like an animal which does not remember the hurt, pain you caused it. Do social works.

Is there such a thing as happiness and if there is does it last? My experience is that happiness is a time in your life rather than a place to be. I guess you could search for the times that you've had a feeling of happiness and do those things again. Rather than searching for absolute happiness be who you are.

Go outside right now..smile at the 1st person you meet..wish them good morning/evening(watever)...and see if that makes you happy...(if it doesn't..then find the 2nd person..or the 3rd...and so on...continue this for the entire week...even if that person does not smile back at you keep on smiling..do the same thing at your workplace/school/home...soon enough you will bump into someone who starts the day with a big smile and that smile might even be yours going around the block cmg back right at you......So Smile and happy thought always...TRY IT TODAY (Even if tat 1st person you see today is your nemesis)

Pessimism is a deterent to disappointment. If you never thing that things will go well, you won't be hurt, upset, disappointed, etc. when they do go that way.
Pessimism and optimism are both problematic as they are opposite ends of the spectrum of dealing with expectations and failed expectations.
Change your expectations.
