I am trying to start a self publishing business and would like some practical advice. I would like to sell a self help guide I have written from my work experience. Any tips on printing, shipping or anything that will help me start off right would be appreciated. I don't plan on becoming rich I just want to supplement my income now that I am retired.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How To Start And Run A Small Book Publishing Company: A Small Business Guide To Self-Publishing And Independent Publishing by Peter I. Hupalo
* Art & Science Of Book Publishing by Herbert S., Jr. Bailey
* This Business of Books: A Complete Overview of the Industry from Concept Through Sales by Claudia Suzanne

Find something that you would like to work with or that you are good at and sell it. Start off in a small way at home, this will enable you to start with low overheads and still be able to work your day job. Business is hard work. Make sure you are going into it for all of the right reasons. The stressors can be great but the benifits are even greater. It rocks if you are the right person that can cope with it

Well I suggest you watch the documentary, The Secret. It's very entertaining and the writer of the "chicken soup for the soul" series is in it.

He started out the same as you. Self publishing and trying to sell books. I think he went around to different book stores and did signings, and things of that nature to get things started.

I suggest you try and get your book sold at as many places as possible. Your distribution channels are extremely important. Make sure the book is for sale on Amazon (you can do this as an independant - it costs 55% of the book price) and then try and get in to as many bookstores as possible. Then try and go for unconventional places to sell the book. Smaller stores, maybe even booths at your local farmer's market. Anything with a steady stream of customers with cash in their hands.

Don't be afraid to spend time marketing and selling the book. That should actually take up the majority of your time.

My advice is to first Corporate/LLC your new business. After this I would develop a web site so people all around the country (or world) can buy your services. Then you will need an online payment solutions. i'm doing the same thing also. i started my business (www.efppublishers.com) to promote my book. my books are being printed by www.lulu.com. they are a print on demand--therefore you only pay for the number of books you want printed. i wish you luck.
