Summer's here, and air-conditioners, fans, etc. use extra electricity. You should be sure that all family members turn off TVs, stereos, appliances, etc. when not in use--and that they unplug rarely used appliances. They should turn the lights off when they leave a room, and the same goes for fans. If your bill is really high, you should also keep your computer turned off at night.
You should get the compact fluorescent lightbulbs, which use much less electricity than 'normal' lightbulbs. They could open blinds/drapes during the daytime, rather than turning on lights.
Realize, too, that electricity rates do go up in summer--just as gas bill rates go up in winter.

The simplest solution is to turn off anything that is not in use. Adjust air conditioning to a higher setting. Use fans instead of an air conditioner. Spend more time outside. Turn down an electric hot water heater's temp. Use microwave ovens instead of electric ovens or stoves when possible. Try insulation as well. There are many things you might do. Some are more reasonable than others. You might even invest in more efficient appliances. Spend $650.00 on a better air conditioner and save on lower bills over a period of 15 or more years. Some things take time to see a benefit. Hang in there.

Any electronic item that has a remote is still drawing power when it is "off" because it isn't really off, it's in stand by mode waiting for the remote to turn it on. If you don't mind losing programmed channels etc, use a surge protector and turn it off so it powers down all the electronics connected to it. Doing this before bed and not turning it back on until afternoon will save you at least half of that electric.
Also, peak electric usage is from 3-9pm weekdays, avoid running the dryer, oven, a/c at that time of day because the electric costs a little more during that time period.
You can also hang dry clothes and then finish them off in the dryer for a few minutes to soften them up. Install timer lights in the bathroom for getting the kids in and out of the shower quicker. Hot water heaters use lots of electric. Take advantage of natural light during the day, use the compact flourescent bulbs, etc.
Your local utility company website may have even more info on cutting your electric consumption.

Keep the curtains and blinds closed. Sun coming through the window heats up the house.
Use fans to circulate the air.
Replace the filter in your a/c every month.
Turn off lights and electronics in empty rooms.
Get a programmable thermostat.
Keep doors and windows closed if using an air conditioner. If not, open a window and put a box fan in it, but face it out. This will draw hot air out of the house.
Put weatherstripping around doors and windows.
Add additional insulation in the attic.

Electric bills are always going to get bigger, that is a fact. Just start using energy efficient products. The little things add up, like leaving the computer on all the time, leaving the cable box or vcr on while tv is off.
Little things add up.

If you have kids, my parents used to make me pay a quarter, which of course inflated to a dollar as I got older, everytime I left a room without turning off the lights, tv, radio etc. It was my contribution to the electric bill. Believe me that it made an impact.

Change to fluorescent bulbs and it sounds to easy but turn off the lights when ever you leave a room. Also if you have a large screen TV they use lots of power even when turned off. Use ceiling fans or room fans instead of the ac whenever possible.
