"Song of the Lioness" Quartet (4 books) by Tamora Pierce. Starts off with "Alanna the First Adventure." About a girl who wants to be a knight, and her twin brother wants to be a sorcerer, so they switch places and she pretends to be a boy. Many swords and sorcery type adventures, as well as the difficulty of growing up a girl while hiding the fact that she's a girl and not a boy (she can't go swimming with other boys, she has to be as strong as they are, etc). All other books by Tamora Pierce are also excellent.
Artemis Fowl books - there are 5 now I think. A rich boy who knows he's a genius and is trying to become a master thief. He gets in trouble with the hidden Faerie folk - elves who are much more technologically advanced.
If you haven't read Eragon you should. Young boy who finds a dragon egg, and it hatches!
David Eddings "Pawn of Prophecy" starts a series of 5 of a young boy growing up in a land where he finds out his Aunt is really a powerful sorceress. Then another series of 5 of him older (10 total). More adult, in that he's not at school and is traveling around his world in dangerous situations, but the books really suck you in.

The Terry Brooks "Shannara" Series deals with Magic, but in a more medieval setting.
"The Hobbit" is the precursor to the "Lord of the Rings" by JRR Tolkien.
The Riftwar Saga" series by Raymond Feist also deals with magic in an alternate medievel world.
The "Myth" series by Robert Asprin has lots of cute plays on words and humor, based on a magician and his cross dimensional friends.
You would likely enjoy any of these.

If you like the away-from-home at-a-sweet-school stuff, you'd love Ender's Game... about a boy genius who is taken by the government to be trained up to be a tactical commander. He's only 5, and much much younger than everyone else as he advances through the classes and the games they play to help develop their skills. It's very well written, and the author, Orson Scott Card is a huge fan of JK Rowling's... he even contributed to the book The Great Snape Debate.
So, you can't go wrong with it :)
