Last Thursday, Obama's campaign sent a memo to reporters, demanding that it not be attributed to their campaign.

This memo carried the headline "Hillary Clinton (D-Punjab)" and referred to Clintons' investments in India; her fundraising among Indian-Americans; and the former president's $300,000 in speech fees from Cisco, a company that has moved U.S. jobs to India.

This was clearly a racist attack against Asians, a group which is frequently subjected to Black racism. (I say this as an Asian American who has frequently witnessed this myself).

Obama tries to pretend that this is just a "dumb mistake" and has completely failed to address or apologize for the clear racism of the memo. No one has been fired by his campaign and he continues to run for President.

Why hasn't his hypocrisy and/or racism been as strongly attacked by the press as we all know any suggestion of white racism would be?

To those who think is simply isn't true, I suggest you read the full story which is reported by the Associated press.

Obama admits the memo came from his campaign and the people who exposed him are from Senator Clinton's staff.

So if you suggest this is a GOP conspiracy then I suggest you check your objectivity.

In determining that this is a racist memo I could always say that I am only using the standards that have been used by people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

That is to say, I am an Asian American, I am offended and if you are not then you have no right to contradict me and further, if you do, then that is proof positive that you are a racist.

Mind you, that's not what I AM saying but it would be poetic justice if I did.

Neenie - I didn't say it wasn't in the media (AP is certainly as big time media as you can get). I am suggesting that a statement that many Asians (myself included) have found to be racist and offensive is not treated with the same degree of moral outrage, strutting of principles, suggestions of the unfitness of the source, demands that the perpetrator, if a staff member, be fired, or, the usual press question of "what did Obama know and when did he know it?"

I did read about this today, it was an Associated Press story I caught it in. Obama's camp is desperately doing damage control trying to make it a non-story, but it's another of the many "little" mistakes he and his campaign staff have been making lately. He can't keep claiming to be running a "clean" campaign and allow this stuff to go on. It's only going to get worse over the next year. Maybe he'll learn an early lesson from this but I wouldn't count on it. I really think over the next six months Obama is going to shoot himself in the foot one too many times to remain a viable candidate, but we'll see. No crystal balls here, just a feeling.

Was this racism, or was it "exposing" the fact that the Clintons have investments which encourage the exporting of jobs? I believe the point was that the Clintons are supporting the outsourcing of American jobs and had nothing to do with racism.

Portecting your nation's job market is the norm. Canada has, or had, very strict laws regarding protecting jobs for their own citizens. In the 70's, I had a friend who was a nurse and her husband was a minister. They wanted to move to Vancouver for her husband to work in pastoral care at a hospital. They were people with good educations, jobs awaiting and money enough to buy a home. They were turned down on the grounds that they'd be taking jobs which could be filled by Canadians.

In the 60's, one of my sisters wanted to spend a year in London working as a secretary and was told that she couldn't take a job which could be filled by a Brit.

Every country tries to protect the job market for the benefit of their own citizens and this is a very hot issue in the US right now.

I have conflicting feelings about jobs being outsourced to India. We need the jobs here, but OTOH, I would like to see India become more prosperous. I have friends who work at call centers in Oregon. I'd hate to see their jobs sent to India. I've also had an interest in India for a long time and hope to see things improve there, so ask myself if there's something else we could do here in Oregon if it's inevitable that those jobs leave.

I live in rural Oregon, but find Indian culture fascinating and love the food. Ten years ago, I couldn't find Indian groceries in Oregon and would make a trip to the SF bay area twice a year to stock up on spices and other groceries. I'd eat out at as many Indian restaurants as I could while there. There wasn't any Indian food in my area of Oregon. During my shopping and dining, I met many Indian people who were very kind and tolerant, explaining things to me and even giving me cooking tips. The Indians I met were educated, kind and tolerant people.

I hope that the US will come to it's senses and quit it's belligerant foreign policy and that India will continue to improve the life of her citizens.

You say the memo "referred to Clintons' investments in India; her fundraising among Indian-Americans; and the former president's $300,000 in speech fees from Cisco, a company that has moved U.S. jobs to India." I fail to see how that is a "racist attack against Asians."

Q: Who could have authored the memo? A: Any of a million disgruntled white males with six beers and a desktop computer. The moral of the story? Don't believe everything you read. Even Hillary knows in her heart of hearts that her husband's problem was that he couldn't keep his thing in his pants, not that he was the victim of a right wing conspiracy.

Because Black people can't be racist. Just ask the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton.

Is this fiction? I'm going to check snopes.

*edit --

What I found is it referenced on blogs, but I found no actual transcript of this and no actual proof that it came from the Obama camp. The closest to a reliable source I found was gop.com which I'd take with a grain of salt anyway. Their article says "anonymous, negative attack on a top rival." Under this description, it could have also been sent out by John Edwards' camp as well.

Someone show me some proof, and maybe I'll be more outraged. And from what I read it seemed more like an attack on Hillary than of any ethnic minority.

-edit again-
I finally found a source I believe http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070618/NEWS/70618028/politics and yes, it was crappy on the part of some of his campaign staff, but I don't really think any presidential candidate, democrat or republican, would actully send such garbage out knowingly. They know they'd get flack for it. Having worked on campaigns before, I'm sure it was some idiot college volunteers who thought they were being "really smart" and "funny". I'd like to see a link to the associated press article before the Obama apology. Because of the excerpts I've read I (being white) should be more offended by a Chris Rock stand up routine than by "D-Punjab." The way I read it, it was still a slam on Hillary for having such strong Indian ties, not that fact that people in India are bad. I still don't see the racism. And unlike your original question, it does seem to be in the media. Maybe not as much as Paris Hilton going to jail, but it is there.

I see an attack against Hillary but not an attack against Asians. Maybe you can point it out for me.

Democrats always get a pass. They got a pass when they made racist comments about Obama. About him being a clean black guy. About him being Osama etc.

They get a pass all the time.
