you can try and defrag the hard drive. also right click my computer and choose properties - click on the Advanced tab - click the settings button under performance. Choose adjust for best performance.

I know you don't want to add more RAM, but that is what would speed it up.

ofcourse you can, but you have to compromise with your computer's look n feel.

There are many processes run which makes your desktop feel n look better cut them all (or some), as 256 mb ram is not enough .Hope you are using Windows Xp

For this right click on Mycomputer icon-> select properties -> click the advanced tab -> click settings button in performance section-> choose visual effects tab ->Select the option Adjust for best performance.

Or you can done by customizing with compromising some effects that you dont need anymore.

Always keep track the services that run on your computer by using Administrative tools-> services, and stop those services that have only spl purposes like gTalk YmeSSenger etc.

You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan.
http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

Some security products are resource hogs. There are a few that don't need as many system resources to run. You can check the amount of current RAM you have (right click My Computer, Properties, General - RAM listed at the bottom).

Also remember that everything takes RAM. Not only security products but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, Photoshop, etc) all require system resources.

if the PC is non-upgradable (the best way is to upgrade the RAM) then probably not... motherboards were not susceptible to upgrades in the days of P3s
