Well for the first answer, it is kinda hard to go around the lake without seeing the bridge. Sorry, I had to say it.

There are so many tourist areas around the lake it is difficult to say where to stop. In terms of scenery, be sure to take time meandering around the Petosky area. Traverse Bay. Old Mission Point and the leenenau penninsula. Lots of wineries etc. Sleeping bear dunes. Manistee National Forest. Saugatuk. Grand Haven. St. Joseph.

There are tons of state parks in Michigan right on the lake. Many of them have small cabins you can rent.

Set your blinders on when making the trek through Indiana. Michigan City and Gary are nothing to write home about.

I haven't been in Wisconsin in years, so I will let someone else fill in the blanks there.

If you have the cash and feel like taking a boat trip, you can take the jet boat from Muskegon to and from Wisconsin. I haven't taken it, but it only takes a little over 2 hours each way.

I second the Sandusky suggestion. Cedar Point is really worth the trip if you like roller coasters. Sea World is right around there too, if you're into that kind of thing. Erie has a fun waterpark, Waldameer. The whole Presque Isle is nice. It's a park area.

I've been around the big lake a few times. Anywhere you go is a place to stop, it never ends. Have fun and be careful.
