The difference is in highways being public, and homes being private. Police shouldn't be able to randomly check a private home. However in a check point, they are usually checking to see if the car is properly registered and insured, and that the driver is licensed. I think that is good for the best interest of other people on the road.

Public safety? As long as I am in my home, then presumably, everything is ok.
When an officer stops every vehicle on the road, just to say hi, and to see which ones are stupid enough to be out drinking and driving, then I have no problem with that. While I do not support that they have the right to randomly search any vehicle that they stop, if the person behind the wheel displays an attitude or commits actions that alert the officers, then I feel that they have the right to take the next step.
You know, it's a good feeling to drive every day and not worry about having my car searched for anything. For that matter, if they did search my car, the most they might find is some spare change and a cd I have been looking for.

Have you ever seen what happens when a driver is on the Highway drunk? Driving is hard enough sober. When you look at how many die on our roads and how much alcohol has to do with the death toll. I totally back the idea of using check point to stop needless death. According to the law, random searches of a home can only be made when there is probable cause and with a search warrent. The 2 things are completely different.

There is no reason to hold random checks on private homes. In your home, you don't have to have a "home license", a "home registration" or insurance. You can drink til you fall off the sofa and it is perfectly legal.
On the road, all of the above are required...and, you can't drive drunk.... Random checkpoints are a good thing......keeps the killers off the road when they are blitzed......

I support spot checks on the road.
But I don't want people running about my home.
I think that there is a big difference between a car and your home. The home isn't going any where while a car is a long time gone before a warrant could be issued.
What are your fears about being checked?

Of course not. The former is a public thoroughfare, the latter is a private residence. I believe the Supreme Court has consistently ruled on the legitimacy of random traffic stops. However, there's another problem with your proposition for random searches of my home. It's called Amendment IV of the Bill of Rights.

In America, driving is a privilege not a right.
If you wish to have a drivers license you must comply with any regulation that your particular state imposes on you. That includes stopping motorists at random to check on there credentials and if they have been drinking. Your car is protected by probable cause laws from unreasonable searches.
Owning or renting your home is not a privilege. In your home you have certain rights. Police need to reach certain legal criteria before they can enter your home.

There is a difference in case you haven't notice, roads are not own by a single person but by taxpayers that through their vote trusted and gave their consent to law officers in doing what is necessary in making it a safe place, while your home can not be entered without your permission or a court order because it's yours and yours alone

COPS have every right to catch people endangering themselves and others by speeding! My friends were killed by a drunk driver! AND THEY DID NOTHING WRONG BUT DRIVE HOME AND GET KILLED BY AN IRRESPONSIBLE PERSON!
I wish they're would have been a checkpoint before the accident!
But personal privacy is another thing... unless they have a search warrant...
