Is it OK to leave it plugged in all the time?
I wondered whether it would over-charge the battery,or something?
When I've finished, I just "shut down" using START and then leave it.

Yes, it is OK to do so. But doing so can shorten the life of your battery. There won't be any immediate damage, in terms of "over-charging" unless there is a power surge.
If you plan to shut down your computer it would be better to turn off the power switch.
Though, pressing "start" on a laptop will probably be putting it in "hibernate" or "sleep" mode depending on your power settings. The laptop is still on in these cases, drawing very little power. If so, it would be a better idea to take out your battery and put it in a cool place.

you can run the laptop with the battery removed i have been running my acer travelmate for three years on mains.and i keep the battery in an air tight bag in the fridge.just run the battery down to about 30% switch of laptop and remove.i use the laptop on battery every so often and it still gives me 2hrs of life on a full charge.
just got my new laptop so the wife is using the old one.and i got a new Acer aspire.its great.runs with no battery in
aswell.on mains 24/7.so don't worry

I have found that batteries only last 2-4 years regardless whether you let them drain down or leave them charged up all of the time.

ur not gonna have any probs....a batteries life is dictated by its first discharge and re-charge, let it run down to dead and charge it to full, and its "memory", for want of a better word, will be maximum...if its plugged into the mains all the time, then the battery wil be irrelevant........one question, and its not just u...if its plugged in so long, why didnt u getter a better spec computer for cheaper, by buying a desktop, as it seems to me thats what ur using it for
