You can get one in person if you live in the county of your birth. If not contact the state Department of Vital Statistics. You must prove who you are with a picture ID. They might require more than one form of identification. You will also pay a fee which varies from state to state.

At the County Recorder's office in the County and State where you were born. That's where you need to start. Some states have moved to a State operated Recording system for births and deaths... the only way you'll know is to go through the County's office. Check out the County website, Click through to their Recorders Office... and go from there. They probably provide directions, instructions, and forms.

You need to go to the Hall of Records for the county you were born in. This is usually in the city that is designated as the county seat and ofetn associated with the county couthouse. Getting copies of birth certificates is not as easy as it once was. You will have to get in touch with the Vital Records Department to get the rules for where you were born.

When you finish your chores for the day, politely ask your master to see it. If you were not born into his possession, he will only have a bill of sales.
