I have an older computer and want to know if I can connect a usb printer.

If it is a desktop you can just add a very inexpensive USB adapter card. If it is a laptop you can still get a USB adapter but they cost more.

So you will have to add one of those to your system. Then you can connect your printer. (That is providing your system is not Win 98 or older it has to be Win98SE or newer).

Does your computer connect to a network? Could it? If so, you can use a print server to connect your USB printer. The print servers can be wireless or wired. They can support USB or Parallel so make sure you get one that is USB. Here's the most surefire connection I can give you. Connect a network crossover cable (make sure you say crossover when you buy) between your PC RJ45 network jack and the RJ45 network jack on the print server. Now you have a networked device that is locally connected (needs no hub, switch, or router). Follow the print server instructions for installing the USB printer. If you do already have a network with a hub, switch, or router... place the print server into an open RJ45 jack on the router using a straight cable (not crossover). Follow the instructions for connecting the USB printer on the print server.

all these answers are viable but i want to let you know that they still aren't guaranteed to work. because the connection is supposed to be usb and it may not work if it isn't, this is the voice of experience. hope that helps

You need to add a PCI USB card internally.

Well, you can get a pci card that supports usb, but if your computer is that old, I would recomend getting a new one.
