Does italy still have a monarchy??

Actually, the current troubles of the Italian Royals sound a little like a comic Italian opera: First of all, the dynasty started out as the Dukes of the Piedmont-Sardinia. However, when the many regions of Italy joined together to become a modern nation state in March 1861, Victor Emmanuel II became the first King of Italy.

Whereupon the House of Savoy reigned but certainly didn't rule until June 1946; at which time, Italian voters declared their country a Republic. Indeed, heirs to the throne of Savoy couldn't even enter Italy until voters amended the Italian Constitution in 2002.

Although history has forever relegated any contenders for the Head of the Savoy Dynasty to cafe society, as of February 2007, two royal cousins were still feuding over who has the right to inherit a very defunct throne.

At age 79, Prince Victor Emmanuel, has "ruled" over the House of Savoy since the death of his father Umberto II in 1983. Nevertheless, his challenger, Cousin Amedeo, the 5th Duke D'Aosta, age 63, maintains that he is the rightful heir to the monarchy. The legal battle over who can claim this honor has even resulted in a physical fight when three years ago, Victor Emanuel punched Amedeo twice in the face at a dinner given by Spain's King Juan Carlos I to celebrate his son's wedding.

No, and that prince on The Bachelor a couple of seasons ago was not a real Italian prince per say, the Italian royal family was overthrown centuries ago. All he had was royal ancestory. It would be like me saying I was a lady because I have/may have a lord in my family background (from like centuries ago).
