It is important to use brackets as -5/8y has a different meaning to (-5/8).y
In the first case y is on bottom line whereas in the second case y is on the top line.
Question 1
Assume you mean:-
(-5/8).y + y = 1/8
- 5y + 8y = 1
3y = 1
y = 1/3

Question 2
(1/3).b - 1 = 5/6
2b - 6 = 5
2b = 11
b = 11/2

first problem:

start by multiplying everything by 8. This eliminates the fractions. You get:

-5y + 8y = 1

3y = 1

y = 1/3

Second problem:

Same strategy. This time, multiply everything by 6 (the lcm of the denominators). Once again, this gets rid of fractions. You then have:

2b - 6 = 5
2b = 11

So b = 11/2 or 5.5

multiply -1/5 on both sides and u get 8y +y=1/9(-1/5). then add 8y and y and u get 9y=1/9(-1/5). then multiply 9y=-1/45. Then divide both sides by 9.
9y=-1/45/1/9

9
