Quick rundown: I am 28 years old. Have driven an automatic for 12 years. My first car was a manual and I drove it (relatively speaking for about two weeks before buying an auto). I never took the time to really learn.

I will be buying a new car in a few weeks and am considering just throwing caution to the wind and buying a manual and forcing myself to learn. There is always the chance that I will regret this if I don't like driving stick.

Option 2 is to by an auto and work out learning to drive manual some other way. The downside to this is that I may love driving manual and will regret having bought an auto.

I'm not looking for someone to tell me what to do...I know this is a personal decision. I am simply looking for friendly advice.

What would you do and why?

By the way, I am certain I want to learn manual...no question.

Buy an old junker manual for 500 bucks and buy an automatic as your real car. Learn to drive manual with the junker, and the next time you buy a new car, you'll know which transmission you want.

The Volkswagon GTI does away with all the hassle. It shifts a manual in .2 seconds. Newest two clutch system and shifts automatically too. Drive one it is highly rated as a great car. Throw caution to the wind and buy a clutch because your learning to drive? If most of your driving is stop and go and on hills auto matic is for you But if you want to drive anything manual learning to shift where passengers cannot feel the shifts is the sign of mastery of the knob! And maxium power to the ground smokey burn outs, down shifting to slow the car is all things to learn too!

Yes you should buy the manual and take the time to learn how to drive it you will have so much more fun driving it and better gas mileage. Manuals also give more control over the vehicle, which is useful in slippery conditions. Even if you end up not liking it, you will have learned and will be able to drive a manual in the future if needed.
