y = kx is called a direct variation problem

x is an independent variable
y is a dependent variable
k is the constant multiplier

y=kx means y varies directly as x. This is a direct vriation. As x goes up sodoes y and vice versa.
y=k/x is an inverse variation. As x increases, y decreases and vice versa.

direct variation except the equation is actually k=xy, it means that in a certain graph the x multiplied by the y is always going to equal k

Hello,

It is called a direct variation because for example if x doubles so does y and if x is halved so is y. k is the constant of variation.

Hope this Helps!!

If k is a constant, then you have the equation of a straight line passing through the origin (0,0).
