The old adage, "A place for everything, and everything in its place" is the best advice.
First, get rid of excess stuff. The more stuff you have, the more it owns and controls you.
Second, have enough storage for your possessions.
Third, keep everything where it belongs.
If you use or move something, put it back when you're done with it. Don't lay something down in a temporary place, because it will clutter your room and then it will be harder to organize everything and put it back where it belongs. When you generate trash, put it in the trash can right there and then.
Spend a little time each day cleaning. You can dust one day, vacuum another day, do laundry a third day, take out trash a fourth day, etc.

Background Opinion: Personally, I'm a messy person. I'm the one with the messy room. Lately, though, I have been trying to clean stuff up. It's kinda been working. Here's what I did... 1. Wake up a little early. When you wake up just tidy up right away. Don't wait until later. If you start the day with a clean room it won't seem like a big grueling messy for the day. 2. Don't keep useless junk around. If your like me, you want to keep everything since it will be "useful" later. Here's what you do... keep that stuff. Find folders or boxes or something. Organize them and then put them on a shelf or into a closet. Most rooms appear messy because stuff is just laid around. A plate here, a worksheet there, some CD's, and iPod. Pack it all away. If you can't see it, it won't bother you. 3. When you come home from school go straight to your room and organize it. Then you can go have a snack or something. The thing is that when you want to go into your room later it's refreshing to see that it is clean. 4. Put stuff away. Don't just lay it onto your desk or something. Put it where it belongs. Trust me, it helps. 5. When doing an activity or something in your room just keep it organized. It will give you the illusion that your room is clean. SPECIFICS - Closet - Empty the whole thing. This may seem like a big activity, but you just have to start. 1. Organize the clothes. Sweaters and shirts on top, pants on bottom. Every person is different. organize your stuff in a way that makes it easy to choose your outfit. -Under the bed - Scoop the whole thing out. Put everything where it belongs. Don't wait, just do what your supposed to. -Vacum - Once everything is in it's place take out the vacum and just clean the space. HOW TO KEEP YOUR ROOM CLEAN 1. Always put stuff away. 2. Be a clean freak. 3. Ask for help. 4. Turn on music while working. 5. Boxes, and other organization stuff. 6. Hide stuff away so you have clear looking space. 7. Always clean in the morning, afternoon, and night. GOOD LUCK - Bubble P.S. The link sited has a list of stuff to clean a room. It's for little kids, but you can get ideas from it.

Get in the habit of picking up as you mess up. Make sure everything has it's place and always put it back there when your done with it. Keep a clothes hamper in your room for soiled clothing and make sure you use it! Always take your dishes etc back to the kitchen every night before you get ready for bed. That way, you always wake up to a clean room and know where all your stuff is.

Organize for the mess!! Now I put my hampers in the closet so my dirty clothes are out of the way....with my old room, I used to keep the laundry baskets under the bed to collect dirty clothes. Make sure you have a garbage bin handy to collect garbage close to where it accumulates...mine is beside the nightstand and the bed where I watch tv at night. Because I like it I sleep with a fitted sheet and a comforter--no top sheet....sheet doesnt get uncomfortable, bed is easy to make...just straighten comforter, I have a duster upstairs in my closet to give everything a quick swipe between good cleanings. Good luck!!

You have to be very organized. Each thing needs a home. You need a specific place for laundry, for papers, your wallet, keys, etc. You have to train yourself to put it back in the same exact spot each time. You can get some organization bins or even some baskets to hold stuff. Make sure you have a trash can in your room that is big enough to actually hold stuff, but not as big as a kitchen garbage can. Strategically place it so that it is easily accessible, but not gaudy. If you can't get to it, you cannot effectively use it. Organization is the key!

Make it a habit to return everything to its place when you are through with it. Never go to bed with a messy room.

Make it a point to get organized, once you start and continue it will become a natural thing. Force yourself to keep it up for a week and then it will become second nature

cluttter is never good. when something falls on the floor, pick it up. put your dirty clothes in a bag and tie it up so the smell isn't too bad. mop and sweep frequently or vacuum and keep things in order. do this everyday and you won't have to live up to your neck in filth.
