Muckler and Melnyk had a meeting Thursday afternoon in Toronto and at the end of the meeting, the two had different ideas on how the team should be run. Saturday morning Melnyk met with Murray in Kanata and the two were more in tune with one another. Saturday afternoon, Melnyk informed Muckler of his intentions, and offered him another front office position which Muckler declined. Melnyk on an afternoon radio show refused to say that Muckler was 'fired' only that he felt a change of job descriptions was needed by particular front office personnel.

I see lots of reasons...
"Like I'm telling you..." story is most likely accurate. Melnyk it a big hockey fan with opinions on hockey.
Murray is 9 years younger than Muckler and has a been a an excellent GM in both Florida and Anaheim.
We'll never know for sure but I suspect Murray could have easily gotten another GM job elsewhere (they may have even been an offer).
Lastly, PuckDat is very wrong! The whole kid line (Penner, Getzlaf and the guy I can't remember) were drafted by Murray! Plus, the prospects they used to acquire Pronger were all Murray draft picks.

That was absolutely ridiculous. I think a similar situation happened recently in another sport. My best guess is that these days owners are so impatient and always think that championships can be bought. Rather than looking for good chemistry they go with their knee jerk reaction and cast aside a piece that might have worked given time and try something new. Yes, they were embarassed in the Finals but they also beat a supposed superior team in the Sabres to get there. So, long story short, the owner is retarded.

Is makes no sense. Ottawa is on a roll. Sure they didn't win the Cup, but the talent is there to do it.
If anyone should go you would think it would have been Murray. He was the coach, and was out-coached in the finals. The Ducks had an answer to every move the Sen's made. Spezza not showing up was huge, but again, it is up to the coach to light the fire.

I just read that Muckler and Murray were having disagreements for about the last 10 months. It was either Murray or Muckler.
And Muckler did not get Roberts as you suggested. And Murray's contract expires at the end of the month.

They probably felt that Murray was better suited for the job and you can't have 2 GM's. I don't think there are any hidden agendas and certainly not obtaining Roberts wouldn't play into it.
How about letting Hasek walk (1 million I think he made) and signing Gerber (3.5 or more-something like that)
Also, the cup winners (Ducks) were partially built by Murray.

They didn`t win. Reason enough for an owner.
And Mr Loblaw - except for a small group of players - Neidermeyer (Rob), Giguere and MacDonald - Bruke remade the Ducks - not much of Murray`s finger prints left.

I would have to say that they probably thought another team would sign Murray as a GM. Muckler only had a year left on his contact anyway.

Someone at work said something about either Muclker or Murray having an affair with one of the wives or something like that. Not sure that makes sense, cause both guys are kinda old! :)
