Use Rit brand dye and follow the directions. The dye should hold as it is designed for fabrics. The white will turn and the black will stay black, as very little dyes affect black. If anything, it will turn a deeper, blacker color. Just make sure that you follow all of the directions correctly, especially the washing instructions if you plan on using the fabric for something that will require washing after you use it.

You can dye the material, however check out the fabric content first, There are 2 main kinds of dyes available, regular and cold water. I would think flag material would require cold water dye. Check the recommendations on the box. If the fabric is Cotton, regular fabric dye will work. Make sure you wash it first to remove any sizing,

Get some white fabric and dye part of it black, or sew a piece of white fabric on the black fabric.

I think it would be easier to get gray fabric and then make it into a checkerboard by adding your own black squares. Here is a resist you could try, so the grey squares won't pick up the black dye http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1961-AA.shtml?lnav=resists.html
