It could not have been avoided. Hitler's plan to subjugate Europe would inevitably draw all major powers into the conflict. It is unlikely that anything other than total victory or total defeat would've halted Germany's military actions.

It could have been avoided if the European govts had shown an ounce of firmness in the 1930s. But that's like saying, 'if pigs had wings'. Anything that risked war would have been electoral suicide.
It's not just foolish or evil governments. The people have to carry the can too.

Addendum: We also would have had to hand over all the Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals, Communists, et al for immediate extermination.

And can we do without all the "sweetness and light" commentary that has NOTHING to do with the question - just a blatant attempt to show off what someone considers "talent?"

No. No war is ever necessary. It could have been avoided. All we had to do was sit down with Hitler, Mussolini and Hirohito and asked what they wanted. We could have easily given Hitler the entirity of continental Europe and given the Japanese the vast Pacific Ocean, and we could have done that with no one being killed! That is all we had to have done with those terrorists was pull our troops out of Europe and the Pacific and talk with them and we could have avoided conflict.
