Just turn the situation around a bit. Think of what would please YOU if it was done randomly and with an open heart. Some of the things off the top of my head...
1. Send a card to someone who taught you something when you were younger. Does not have to be a "teacher" but perhaps someone who taught you a lesson that no book could.
2. Take lunch/dinner to an elderly person who you know. Better yet, share it with them. To slow down and show that you care could be better than any gift at a holiday.
3. Read a book to a sick child. Many hospitals have children's' wards that would welcome someone to come and spend time with the kids. You can even call ahead to see if there is some type of program at your local hospital.
4. Random acts of kindness. This could be that you mention how beautiful someone's shoes are while at the bank... Letting someone go ahead of you in line at the grocery store... notice someone mowing a yard and drive by and give them a bottle of water. Your small act of kindness could really make someone's day.
It is a great idea to do good things for others. Soon you will see how good it makes YOU feel too. :)

I think the "good deeds" that are the important ones are the little things you can do everyday for anybody. For example, holding the door open for someone, letting an elderly person have your seat on the bus/subway, being polite, and giving someone a genuine smile.

All good deeds stem from selfishness. The desire to 'get something' for doing these things is at the heart of it. Whether it's a good feeling or bragging rights the motivation is for some form of 'self' gratification. Take a hard look at your motivation beyond all the romantic notions and social ideals. There isn't such a thing as a 'good deed' in nature only in mankind's synthetic creation of what you 'think' a 'good deed' might look like. There is nothing outside of you that can make you feel 'good' about this life and there is no reason to pursue one.

Knowing more of why you need to do a good deed (which assumes that you normally don't) would be helpful.
The best choice is to do something anonymously. Reward something that you see. Being critical in life is easy. Show someone that you appreciate something that they have done.

Work on your personal values and the deeds will come from that, every day. Act on what you know is the right thing.

Some people think that they are "better persons" if they give money or help others physiaclly. But remember what St Paul says "If I give all my money to the poor but I don´t have charity, my deed will be worthless" : Try to find God in your haert and love Him. He´ll tell you what to do

help the needy, go and visit old people even if you are stranger to them, be ever helpful to your friends and neighbours, etc. , share love and knowledge to better people's lives, do everything that you think can benefit the human race, but please do it SELFLESSLY, reject even the idea of self-gratification or recognition, etc. Because, you know what?, what you will receive, after having done all this without expecting anything in return, will be worth a lifetime of blessings for you and for your forthcoming generations!!!
