I've had this betta for a little over 5 weeks now. He's healthy, builds bubble nests, loves to eat, all that good betta stuff. Although I've noticed that he's been jumping out of the water lately. (He's in a covered 3 gallon tank.) I was just wondering if this is normal behavior.

I've had a few bettas that were regular jumpers, but they mostly only do this when there's something wrong with the water. I'd suggest checking the temperature to make sure it's not too warm (76-80o is plenty) and that there's not a buildup of ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate. If you don't have a test kit of your own, most pet stores will test a sample of your water if you take it in.

If you don't want to be bothered with that, try a 25% water change (you should be doing this on a weekly basis anyway) and use a gracel vacuum to clean the gravel in the tank - often wastes can build up and contribute to poor water quality if this isn't done regularly.

You may want to test the PH balance of the water. He may be trying to jump to another puddle (as in the wild) because the water is not right or doesn't have enough oxygen. Check your book on how to care for betas and test the water. If it isn't the right PH, then use items specifically designed to change the ph from the pet store. That should help. I had a dragon fish that did that too. But they are known for doing that and being very particular with their water, so I was told.

If he's healthy and blowing bubble nests, you have no reason to worry. Bettas love to jump, especially at night.

yes it is normal -- just keep him covered -- most never jump but once they learn how to jump they never stop. you can grow some floating water sprite or something that will keep him from jumping. i just recently started keeping water sprite in my bettas and they love it a little too much -- they like to bask on top of it and you will think you lost your little guy and then he will come swimming out.

You need to be testing the water. Get a test for PH, nitrate, nitrites. You should also be doing water changes 25% weekly.

We normally only see this if the water conditions are less than favorable. Have you been doing water changes? If you have the pH may not be right coming out of your tap. I would try getting your pH to 7.0 it may be higher(most tap water comes out at around 7.8 -8.5 depending on where you live)
