there is "OFFENSIVE NATIONALISM" when people use their nationalism to agress other nations, set up imperialist agendas
and there is
"DEFENSIVE NATIONALISM" like in Scotland where there is no Scottish country as such and only the national conscience of beeing who you are can save the common heritage. It is not against others, it is just for survival. It is also the case when you are under an immediate large threat.
The art of FASCISM is to make "AGRESSIVE NATIONALISM" look like "DEFENSIVE"

Its in the governments best interest so from the governments point of view they certainly should. It might not be in the peoples best interest however.
Should they? Logically yes. Ethically no.
Remember that a government is not the same as a nation. A government is a ruling body. It's members may not even like the common people they rule. A nation is the whole of the citizens and while nations permit governments to rule them, governments don't always rule in the best interest of their people. Nationalism tends to erode freedom and liberty if taken too far. Its sometimes a bad thing for regular people.

The line between nationalism and patriotism is fine, and it's placement can be subjective. A government should certainly encourage patriotism - even if doing so risks evoking nationalistic or jingoistic feelings in some.
The alternative, of course, is to sow hatred or contempt for your own country, and, as America illustrates, today, that's not such a great idea.

Certainly not! This just leads straight to George Orwell's 1984.
Pros: Makes for a more disciplined military and sometimes a better economy (although this last depends more on the economic system than patriotism).
Cons: Alters people's minds so that they don't understand what they're doing and blindly follow their country instead of thinking things over logically, and as such leads straight to 1984. Also tends to cause intolerance, wars and genocide.

nationalism brings health to a nation.
strength, etc.
If the USA were full of nationalistic people , we wouldn't have a bunch of greedy rich people fleecing the poor. There would be a basic respect for all americans.
Damn, the 80's are so long gone now, back then we were all Americans and we were all family.
Now it's devolved into fear and animalism.

yes they should...America did for about 200 years we stayed strong and many loved this country...since about the late 50's and 60's liberals have been slowly taking away our national identity and the encouragement of love for country...now look at our society today...love of country also produces respect for authority, for cops, our law, etc... there was much less crime before the liberal movement in America infested it laws...
