What kind of system restore were you doing? If you were using a Windows CD, chances are you lost everything anyway, and you should just try again. If you were doing a specialized restore disk that came with the machine, that could be the case, or it could not be . . . but starting over can only help. If you were doing a native Windows System Restore, going back to a point in time, it sounds like you had a bigger problem you were starting with in the first place. See if you can boot into safe mode (F8 or the Del key while booting up, if I remember correctly), and try to do a native Windows System Restore from within Safe Mode. If not, but it gave you a prompt for "last known good" try again, and choose that. If none of these options work, without knowing what file it's looking for, I'd say you lost those documents.

Try booting in Safe Mode and running an SFC (System File Checker). Something could have corrupted with the accidental shutdown.
To get into Safe Mode either hold down or tap the F8 key repeatedly while the computer is starting up. To run SFC, close all applications such as Office, Messenger, Email, etc, and go to:
- Start
- Run
- Type in sfc /scannow (include the space before the " / ")
What SFC does is that it attempts to fix or replace critical operating system files. Sometimes this can be done without the installation disk, however it may prompt you for the appropriate operating system installation disk. If that is the case, then you know that you definitely have file corruption or something missing. Insert the disk if prompted. Also you should run SFC using the Administrator account.
Don't surf, play games or do anything while SFC runs. After it is completed, reboot your computer.

Somewhere above is a best answer.
If, all else fails, write down the name of the missing file. Then copy it from a friend's computer and be sure to write down where the file is filed. The "File Path"
Example; C:\windows\system\darncrap.dll
Then use the backup to boot to DOS and manually install the missing/damaged file.

you could try going to Geek Squad but they will probably tell you to do the back up disk though.
