I set up a VPN on my Server at work and I can successfully connect to it from home. I only need the VPN to connect to the domain and access certain files. However, while I'm 'surfing' the Internet, while the VPN is still connected, is that traffic passing through the VPN or my regular Internet connection? I don't want to unnecessarily eat up bandwidth on my server.

It depends on how you have the VPN connection setup. The default for Microsoft (in their infinite wisdom) is to use the gateway on the VPN for all traffic whcih means you are using your office for internet when the VPN is active.

You can turn that OFF and use your local gateway. Go to the VPN connection in connections Right click and click properties. On the screen that appears click on the Networking tab. Then click on TCP/IP settings. At the bottom click on advanced and uncheck (use default gateway on remote computer) That will let you browse locally not from the VPN.

MS really made this easy to adjust didn't they!
