my friend summoned to appear in court by national rail, for not buying a ticket, what can happen to him , he is a student, any ideas anyone

Check and see if his school has legal help for students. Most colleges and universities do.

It will probably be a fine and compensation to National Rail, if it is a criminal case. If it is a civil case, then he can expect to pay for the ticket and legal fees.

I would think just a fine.
That is if he hasn't been in trouble before. The court system does look at that.

But if he is normally a good citizen & he is also a student. I think the judge will just fine him, but the fine cost will be up to the judge.

Sounds like it would be misdemeanor theft of service since he stole a ride. If otherwise clean record, probably just a fine and no jail time. May be on his record for a while. If he doesn't commit any more stupid acts, then it would probably be expunged, again, assuming he doesn't already have stuff on it.
