I would put my money on the Roman. The Spartan maybe tough as nails but the Romans equipment was better.

1. One -on-one a Spartan could take out a centurion but a phalanx (Spartan unit of soldiers) couldn't touch a legion (Roman unit of soldiers)
2. The Spartans predate Alexander's army.
3. Alexander's army overwhelmed the Persians - a world superpower- as well as the Egyptians- another world super power. His army was then defeated by the Romans- one of the greatest military powers of all time. But the Roman army was overrun by barbarian hordes whom they technically should have been able to defeat, however due to political upheaval and mismanagement of the Roman Senate, they couldn't compete with the raids. So the arguably greatest and most powerful empire in history was bought to its knees by raiding horsemen.
After Rome fell, the strongest powers to emerge were the Mongols, led by Genghis Khan and the Huns, led by Attila but they faded with the death of their leaders, Khan and Attila.
The Byzantine Empire was then the largest empire but not the strongest military power. They were constantly overrun by the Sacarens, Goths and others.
The Franks led by Charles Martel and then Charlemagne became the strongest army. They began the Carolingian dynasty ending the period of antiquity and moving into the Dark Ages.

the roman Centurian was a member of a unit.
in single combat they were not all that great. they had great group battle tactics and good command structure.
Spartans and the like were trained to battle head on against a single opponet (or more)
however as for ranking the best armies. of antiquity.
Ghengis Kahn i would put at the top. he held the world in a grip of fear, and everyone knew that to anger Kahn was to invite destruction to your entire country.
Rome, had great militayr percision and tactics, but they spread themselves too far. and were often vulnerable from attacks reom within. sacking rome was almost a national sport for disgrunteled civilians.
the same with Allexander. he had a great army but fell to his desire for conquest. and lacked sons with enough will and charisma to hold it together after his death.
i would put Nepolian Bonaparte next, and consider him the last great French leader. after him the French seemed to become surrender happy.
the Spartans really were not an army, but a group of 300 skilled warriors fighting for their homes. and they udes the tarrain to break the roman ranks before the attacks, thus allowing them to hold against much larger forces. but not really a army in my estimation.
many peoples would deserve mention but these were the greatest.

A Spartan was like special forces and a Centurion was a ground pounder, so, YES a Spartan would be able to do this easily.
