Here's the list of 100 books voted by 54 writers from 100 countries in an Oslo, Norway poll in 2002. I think it's a good guide for anyone interested in finding some good, great books to read and enjoy.

Read Reading Lolita in Tehran but before you read each section read the books they're named after. (Lolita, Pride and Prejudice--but you should really read all of Jane Austen, The Great Gatsby, Washington Square or something by Henry James and I think she mentions Poe as well.)
Things Fall Apart
The Old Man and the Sea
Of Mice and Men
I haven't read War and Peace or Anna Karenina but I feel I should and I think you should too.
1984

I'm reading Once and Future King right now....really good. If you like DIckens, give Hardy a try. Tess of the D'urbervilles is good. Tolkien is always a good bet. And Sir Walter Scott (Ivanhoe)
