I had the same problem with my boyfriend when we first started dating. After a while I would point out different outfits I liked and he would let me know what he thought. It turned out that he really did like my taste, and was pretty ambarassed about some of his clothes, but that he couldn't always afford nice polos and jeans. I splurged one day and bought him a ton of clothes he had told me he liked and he was so happy. They're all he wears now. Don't try to change your boyfriend's style, but ask him what types of things he likes. If he likes tees, treat him to a designer t-shirt from Armani Exchange or Abercrombie. Or you may even want to try getting him a plain polo shirt saying you thought it would look good and is similar to what he wears. Get colors he likes too. You don't have to change your style to look nice.

Start with one or two polo shirts in colors he likes, that also look good on him [ like black and red ].
Then branch out to some nice khakis, or jeans that fit.
Add some dress [ button-down ] shirts [ wrinkle free please, and tapered fit if he's slim ] in a neutral and a bright color [ like white, and royal blue ].
You don't have to spend a lot of money - I bought my husb a dress shirt and two polos for Father's Day, and only paid
$45.00 at Ross. Also, try Marshall's. Check that they are not
'seconds' before you buy.

no, not at all.. I buy my boyfriend clothes all of the time, probably a little too much. He likes it though, before we started dating all he would wear was a gray t-shirt and khaki's now he wear all different types of clothing. I've got him in polo shirts, button down woven shirts, baseball t's, Henley's and a lot more and you know he likes it he just doesn't like shopping. I bet if you bought your boyfriend clothes he would like it too, he probably just isn't concerned with the way he dresses.

I would buy him a polo, and a button shirt. Than come home and say "honey, look! I found this at _____ (Make sure you buy something for yourself as well) when I was browsing for (whatever you bought yourself!) I thought you would like it!

If he says something about not wearing them, maybe suggest going on a date, or he can wear them to work, or another place?

He may be a little insulted, and might protest wearing a collar, but hey, it really is a good thing you are doing for him. If you find that you struck a nerve with your kindness, don't tell him that you bought him clothes because you think he dresses like a slob. Instead, tell him "I found these on sale and thought that you would look good in them."

You could try. It might be hard. A guys choice in clothing is as much a statement about his personality. I'm a tee-shirt and jeans guys. When my ex-girlfriend, bought me some polos and I did wear them. But I always remained a tee-shirt and jeans guy at heart. (I always wonder if that was why we broke up.)

I think it depends on the context, and your boyfriend's personality. Just out of the blue might be inappropriate and insulting, but if you gave them as gifts for his birthday or a holiday gift, then probably not.

You should understand, however, that if he just doesn't like wearing those types of clothes, he may either not wear them even if you buy them, or wear them only for your sake without enjoying them.

I dont think it would be insulting to hook him up with some better gear. Sometimes guys need a girl to help them out when it comes to clothes.

Good idea, speak to him about it. It won't be insulting if you approach it in the right manner. He is gonna need some button down shirts one day anyway for things like weddings, funerals, job interviews.

No it wouldn't be insulting but he might think that all you care about is looks and I'm not so sure you want that. Besides, maybe thats his style. Check his closet, maybe he already has polos and stuff but he just doesn't like them.
