There's no way to tell when they're younger, but as they mature, the female may be a bit "plumper". They're egg layers, but the fish usually don't spawn in aquariums - they need a much larger space.

To support Copperhead and the other poster, right from the first link Copperhead gave you.

Gender : Can not be determined by external features.

Now what the last poster is getting at, and generally this is true in Gourami, the dorsal fin on a male will be longer and almost touch thier tail fins, while the females will have a distinctively shorter and rounder dorsal fin, and as Copperhead also said, the female is going to have a pronouced round mid section where the males will be slimlined. This is only a general rule, and with this particular species of Gourami, it does not apply. Copperhead and the other poster are correct here and thumbs up to them.

They're both wrong. On all guoramis, the way to tell the sex of mature fish is by looking at the dorsal fin. The dorsal fin (fin on top of fish running from behind the head to the before the base of the tail) on females is rounded off at the tail end. On males, it comes to an elongated point at the top rear of the fin.
