You need your soil to be loamy to create pretty flower beds. If your soil is heavy in clay you need to add in some peat moss. If your soil is heavy on the sand side I would add a good quality potting soil. Add some fertilizer and you should be good. Even 10-10-10 works good. Be sure not to get to close to plants and water in well. Plant your flowers, mulch them with about 3 inches of mulch and you should be good. If you want those stubborn weeds to stay away, use some Preen for several months of weed free beds.

You might not need to add anything, depending on how nutrient-rich your soil is.

You can take it to a gardening place and they'll test it.

the most common addition is lime, which reduces the acid level. If you're near pine or other coniferous trees, and your acid level is high, I'd mix some lime in. It certainly won't hurt.

Plough the grass back in along with some cow dung or other organic manure, it will compost and enrich the soil.

It would be good to add a soil conditioner to the soil to add nutrients/add moisture to the ground. If you would like to do this chemical free- respond back & I can point you in the right direction.

Assuming that you have a bare flower bed, you should add fertilizer and till it. (mix it up). Then plant to your heart's content. Good luck! Brand new bed...brand new possibilities. Got to love that. Trilli

I'd put Miracle grow in it. My plants and baby trees thrive on that stuff.
