Do a Google search for 'Podsafe music' you'll find hundreds of sites with songs from independent bands you can download for free legally. If it's the major label artists you want you'll have to pay if you want to get it legally from a service such as iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody or walmart.com.

The best way to download "free" music is through a peer to peer program such as bit torrent, bearshare, limewire, or shareaza. Just do a google search for these programs !
