Politically speaking, it started with the Declaration of Independence, then the Revolution, then the first 13 states formed the USA, then states were added over the years, until we got to 50.

It was formed when Europeans fled Europe and the murderous Catholic church. Many of the "pilgrims" were "Freemasons", they had freed themselves from the Catholic iron fist that ruled Europe. Way way back in time their was actually only one land mass that split up into seveal masses, one of which became the United States!
